RE: elongated hole on pin

I just bought one of these...
clicky
It actually screws together so I added an o-ring to both sides and it fits really snug. No slopping around.
It took me awhile to find it but I'm really happy with it... and it's rated class five.

RE: New truck

Bummer about your sons tranny. Going up and starting that climb in 100+ deg weather is insane.
I don't think the alison will give you any problems at all.
Enjoy!!
BTW Did you get the intergrated brake controller? It's really nice!

RE: New truck

I put about 800 on mine before taking a two week trip to Washington. No problems and I love this truck.... you will too!
I also know that road and can't wait to try it. Did it in my 1500 and didn't really care for it. I think I'd just laugh at it now.
BTW, I did get home from the dealer and read all manuals...twice... before I drove it again.
Good luck!!

RE: One for the Enviromentalists

"I "do my part" by going easy on the go-pedal until I can filter my exhaust through a Prius filter. That is, I wait until a Prius is tailgating me, then I nail the go-pedal. The black sooty cloud of exhaust emitted from my diesel then quickly enters the Prius' engine and cabin filters for purification. I feel good knowing I'm doing my part to save the planet. "
LOL
I for one have both a Prius and a GMC 2500HD D/A. But my diesel has the DPF so I have no need to filter my emissions through my Prius.
Very funny though.

Mine came with it and I love it. Not so much for heat in winter but A/C in the summer!!! Just that two or three minutes really helps.
Very nice option.

RE: 2008 GM Duramax mileage question

daamac
I have a 2007.5 GMC 2500HD D/A. (same as 2008 with DPF)
Empty:
I get approx. 14 mpg in town and I get 19-20 mpg doing 55-60 mph.
Now, that said, I can’t seem to find 55-60 in So. Cal. too often and end up seeing 70 way too often. That gets me about 17-18 mpg.
Stop and go really eats up the mileage towing or empty.
Towing:
With my ~7000–7500 toy hauler I average 13-14 mpg and I actually do keep it right around 62 mph.. mostly :B
My wife tells me if I slow down to 58 or even 55 I would get even better mileage. Right, like that's going to happen.
You can’t beat the power going up the hills around here or when passing a Prius (it's ok, I own one of those too).

RE: Running the Refrigerator while towing

And be sure you turn off those Cell Phones while Fueling :B
I always worried about My Fathers pacemaker going off while refueling, so we put him in his wheelchair and wheeled Him well away from the pumps :h
Sure hope the wheelchair is not one of those electric types. You do know they could produce EM interference, which could cause a problem with the pacemaker, that could blow up the whole place.

RE: 2008 chevy duramax

With a little over 11k miles now I have NEVER seen any smoke. I smell the regen once in while but NEVER see smoke. Mileage is about 13 towing and 18 hwy with no load and a light foot. Resist the urge to blow the doors off most other cars, it kills the mpg. Just because you can does not mean you should... even if it is fun.
When towing, I keep it under 65... and I should only go 55 in Kalifornia. When not towing I tend to go faster. :W
If you are getting 6 mpg I think I would have it checked. If you see smoke on a stock 2008 I would really have it checked. Soon!!

RE: Smaller pickups

I’ve got a 96 Ranger, 4 liter, auto. With 180k miles on it, she gets 20 mpg highway and around 16 city. Original engine, second tranny. Pulls hard. This is my main daily beater and my first choice when going to a parking lot. I just don't care what they do it... It keeps running and running.
Also, I’ve got a 2007.5 GMC 2500HD D/A. It’s currently the most expensive driveway ornament I’ve got. Seriously, I use it when I need to and don’t dwell on fuel cost, but it tends to only get used when I’m towing the T/H every 4 to 6 weeks. It performs that task with ease and puts a smile on my face when going any uphill.
Bottom line, my Ranger gets slighty better milage than the D/A but at a lower cost basis for unleaded. I don't care where I park the Ranger (beater) but I'll walk a block to get some extra parking space for the D/A.
I've determined I will keep the ranger alive for as long as possible.
PS
I've also got a Prius and love it. My son liked it too and now drives it full time. Bummer, I really like that car and figured it offset my D/A very nicely.

RE: The big question

Having the 2500HD D/A, I can honestly say it’s a no brainer for towing.
However let me say that daily commuting was never a factor. I have a little truck that I use for my 15 minute commute. Diesels don’t even get warmed up properly in less than 10-15 minutes and short little trips are not the best for it.
IMHO, it really sounds like the 2500HD 6.0l, with 4.10 gears will fit your daily driving style better. Yeah, the $$ savings from a diesel can buy a lot of fuel.
The 1500 should not be considered for towing. Who knows… this may not be the last trailer you own and you might want something heavier next time.
Just do yourself a favor and NEVER drive someone else’s diesel while towing. That way you’ll never know what you’re missing. :B
Get what you want and be happy with it!

RE: Chevy 2500HD Ride Quality

Yes, the locking differential was included in the package. I love the way the truck drives, now I just have to figure out how to park it!
LOL
DW loves driving around in our CC, long bed, 4X4. She says all the guys are so polite and seem to want and get out of her way.
:E :E :E :E
I haven't told her that it might not have so much to do with being polite but they really really do want to get out of her way... Way out of her way!!! :R

RE: Chevy 2500HD Ride Quality

On my 2007.5 (2008 model) the skid plate is not in the way. Furthermore, I installed the Fumoto oil valve and do not have to worry about spills.
I guess they changed design.

RE: Chevy 2500HD Ride Quality

Ummmm, I just happen to know a little about the truck your talking about….
Z71 – shocks, plates, stickers… that’s all folks. But if that’s the truck the dealer has, with all the other options you want, then a Z71 it is. They don’t care if it has the package or not, their giving em away!
Remove plates for oil change – OEM plates… Not true. It’s a rumor produced by the anti-4x4 people and their political machine that employ lobbyist to push their agenda on forums like this. :B (just kidding, mostly)
4x4 – I bought it. I’ve used it. I like it!!!
Did I need it? Doesn’t matter, I already bought it.
Can I do without it? Doesn’t matter, I already own it.
I’ve used the 4x4 pulling snowmobiles, pulling in and out of muddy roads, and pulling the trailer.
On one trip, after dropping off the trailer, I used the 4x4 to get up a road looking out over miles and miles of country.
Yeah, I like it.
Long bed, oh yeah!! IMHO, Great ride, tows so much better. It’s not driven much to the mall during holiday season and we don’t take this truck every week to the store for groceries. You don’t park this truck in the same spaces as a Ranger.
I bought this truck to tow with and it does that very very well. My wife actually likes the ride better than all of our cars.
Win-Win.
Good luck!

RE: WDH

What everyone else said!!
I've got a light toy hauler for my truck and I wouldn't tow without my Equalizer. With tractor trailers, other large trucks, or just windy conditions... I don't want to wait until it's too late to find out I need one.
Reese dual cam or Equalizer... it's hard to beat for the price.

RE: Idle Time

SNOW
1 a: precipitation in the form of small white ice crystals formed directly from the water vapor of the air at a temperature of less than 32°F (0°C) b (1): a descent or shower of snow crystals (2): a mass of fallen snow crystals.
Sorry, just had to remind myself what "snow" was. It’s supposed to be 72 deg f. tomorrow where I live, bright and sunny.
Let’s see, short sleeve shirt… check,
sun glasses… check,
sun screen lotion… nah, too early in the year for that. Maybe next week.
Lol, really sorry!! At least there are some trade offs for living in Southern Kalifornia.
Hope that white stuff goes away real soon.

RE: Can I justify a diesel ?

I don't believe one size fits all. Diesel is not always the best choice as gas is not always the best choice.
Today, If I were buying a new TV, I would give real serious consideration to the gasser... right up until I get the diesel. I've got extra cars and trucks to make the short trips so when I tow, I want my diesel and I'm willing to pay (and pay) for that diesel grin.:B It is a choice I made based on my driving needs and wants.
I think you're making a good choice based on your driving needs and towing style. Short trips are not good for the diesel and it does not sound like you will tow a whole bunch. Good for you, good choice!

RE: Ford F450 / fifth wheel - 4WD or 2WD

I have towed my (much lighter) trailer and honestly could have gotten by without 4x4. That said, I'm glad I had 4x4. Once, after finding a camping spot, we took off without the trailer and found some really cool 4x4 roads that took us up a hill where we could see for miles and miles. The choice to go up there would have been made for us without the 4x4. Also, out at Dumont dunes, could I have made it without 4x4, sure! Other people do it all the time. But throwing it in 4x4 and camping further off the beaten path was really nice.
Is it necessary, no. You just have to be more careful where you go and where you park.
